If a letter like this has landed on your doormat recently, you’re not the only one — and yes, it’s important.

(These are real letters recently received by clients.)

Why You’ve Received This Letter

HMRC is now contacting sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 to inform them that they’ll be required to comply with Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax from April 2026.

If you’ve received this letter, it means:

  • Your income maybe over the £50k threshold
  • You will need to submit quarterly updates via approved software if it is
  • You must keep digital records of income and expenses

What You Should Be Doing Now

Start using accounting software (if you’re not already).
We have already successfully enrolled clients into the MTD pilot, so we’re familiar with how it works — and how to make it easy for you.
You must now use a business or separate bank account exclusively for business income and expenses. MTD requires clear, separate business records. If you’re still running transactions through personal accounts, this needs to stop immediately.

We will be disconnecting personal accounts from your records with your permission, and any business activity run through personal accounts may incur a surcharge due to the extra work required to separate and categorise it.

We’re Here to Support You

We offer:

  • Set-up and training on FreeAgent or QuickBooks
  • Quarterly update preparation and submission
  • Full bookkeeping and compliance support under the MTD system

Bottom Line

This isn’t something to ignore or delay. If you’ve received this letter and aren’t yet on software or still using a personal account for business, now is the time to sort it. You’ve got a head start — use it.

What Happens Next

If you’ve received one of these letters, we’ll be sending you a personal MTD authorisation request soon. This is a secure link that lets you authorise Childminder Accountancy Services Ltd to act for you under the new MTD for Income Tax rules.

🖱️ The link will be unique to you and will come directly from us.

You’ll need to click the link and authorise us within 21 days of receiving it — otherwise, it will expire and we’ll need to resend it.

⚠️ Please don’t sign up for the MTD pilot yourself. We’ll handle enrolment on your behalf when it’s the right time. Signing up early without coordination can cause issues or duplicate submissions — best to leave the setup to us.

Once you’ve authorised us, HMRC will confirm, and your account will be MTD-ready well ahead of the April 2026 deadline.
